Bobbin Case, Bernette #. I’ve just acquired a Bernina Bernette 55 for $90. I don’t know if I’m going to keep it yet (the seller guarantees satisfaction with the transaction and has already indicated her willingness to take it back). History: When I got it home, the presser foot lever wouldn’t raise/lower the foot. A quick check revealed that a bit of oil was needed; easy fix. Then I had some trouble with thread tangling in/near the bobbin assembly, but only intermittently. I’ve played with tension and it seems to be getting better. Still need to do a thorough cleaning and oiling, however. Last hurdle: It is missing the slide-out accessory box, which of course also serves as the table/surface that goes around the free arm. Personally, unless I’m sewing sleeves and such, I like the support that this surface gives to the fabric as I sew. I got this machine for my niece, who I’m teaching to sew. Two questions: 1. Do you think it’s worth keeping without the accessory box/surface (particularly for a beginner)? Do you have any idea where I might be able to find that part? Google is failing me:) Side note: My local Bernina dealer says their service person will do a general once-over and cleaning for $89, which is one dollar less than I paid for the machine. Before I put that into it, would love to get others’ thoughts on moving forward with this machine. Quote: plazaglass I’ve just acquired a Bernina Bernette 55 for $90. I think I can find a much better old now called vintage mechanical sewing machine at a thrift store or on CL for under 50 dollars I can try out myself before it follows me home. When I looked on Google ”Bernette 55 reviews”,in the first link it said. Bernette 65 Sewing Machine Manual'No matter what you do to adjust the tension it always ends up in a big old mess of threads. This machine has put me off sewing for a long time and I was thinking about giving it one more shot but not anymore. I think I will save up for a new machine!' By the way,Bernettes are not Berninas! I bought an almost new mechanical Kenmore made by Janome in very good working condition for 50 dollars at a yard sale with most of the accessories for our DGD. A machine is just whatever it is (by just what it is and the exact model of something) each time, the actual brand name, does not mean much or anything really. But, if I saw it in the thrift store (where I have got lots of my used machines, no I would not ever have paid a whole $90 for it) and that is just because I could have found a much better, older machine of previous decades (that I really could test sew on first) in some place like that, for more like $14.95 or maybe $35 tops. Bernette 55 ManualBut, I also think it might be hard for a beginner sewer to learn to sew with only a free arm too. A lager more stable space there, I think would be better. I don't think it would be hard to learn to sew, with even only a flat bed and no free arm at all though. -- Edited on 6/29/15 at 4:45 PM. 1957 chevy truck repair manual.
